Artists Reflect on Climate Change: New Exhibit

Castro Valley Library is featuring the work of seven local artists across three spaces in the building. Their work reflects on climate change and ties in to the theme for Castro Valley Reads 2022.

“Art can help us understand and reflect on our climate crisis in a different way than facts and figures,” said Dawn Balestreri, branch manager. “We are hoping these works will help people connect on an emotional level to what is happening to the planet.”

Gallery Wall (Through April 4)

Rita Sklar is exhibiting 12 paintings, some watercolor and some mixed media, on the climate change impact on birds of the Bay Area. Her husband, Joseph Sklar, reused a discarded redwood fence to build a frame for each piece.

The Gallery Wall exhibit is curated by ART, Inc.

Lobby Display Cases (Through February 28)

Pat Doyne is showing two watercolor paintings on the impact of the drought at Lake Chabot.

Jennifer Koney is showing three mixed media pieces on the impact of anticipated sea level rise on the Hayward shoreline.

Ann Maloney-Mason is showing acrylic paintings of two insects greatly affected by climate change: monarch butterflies and bees.

Douglas Mason is showing three photographs of creatures affected by changes in our oceans.

Dolores Vitero Presley is showing a three-panel quilt on the impact of the drought at Lake Temescal.

Ruey Lin Syrop is displaying three pieces: an oil painting of plastic waste in the ocean and two oil paintings of “orange sky day” during the 2020 wildfire season.

Learning Center Windows (Through March 31)

Jennifer Koney is showing door-sized panels from a series called Sea Level Rise. Each of these large resist-and-pour and mixed media paintings features a horizon line 55" from the floor upon which the viewer stands. That figure is a projection of how much the San Francisco Bay is expected to rise by the year 2100.

The Lobby Display Case and Learning Center exhibits is are curated by the Hayward Arts Council.
