Eden Garden Club Plant Pop-Up
Sponsored by Eden Garden Club the Plant Pop-Up is held at Paradise Gardens located at 20095 Mission Blvd. in Hayward from 10 AM to 3 PM. The Plant Pop-Up features vegetables, perennials, succulents, shrubs, natives, pottery, garden supplies and tools. Donations of plants and garden related items in good condition are accepted from 6 AM to 9:30 AM. The proceeds are given for School Garden Grants awarded to CVUSD and HUSD schools. Paying for College with Scholarships
Join us as Becca demystifies the complex network and application processes related to scholarships for college and prepares you for the tuition ahead. Learn how to approach the scholarship search process, and what the realistic timeline looks like if you or your student plans Fall enrollment. Becca teaches the “5-click strategy” of digging through identified websites with intention. Participants will leave this interactive workshop with a categorized list of search terms for themselves, a 3 step-process for online searches, and a better sense of how public institutions, private donors, and large organizations advertise scholarship opportunities. Rebecca Lippman brings a decade of experience as a UCLA instructor and advisor at the Center for Scholarships and Scholarly Enrichment (formerly the Scholarship Resource Center), where she coached undergraduate students through the process of identifying, applying for, and managing scholarships. Dahlia Tuber Sale
For spectacular summer color, it’s time to plant those dahlias! The San Leandro Dahlia Society will hold its annual tuber and small plant sale on Saturday, May 4, 10 am- 1pm at the Milford Garden Improvement Clubhouse, 13055 Aurora Drive, San Leandro. That’s across the street from Garfield Elementary School. Tubers will sell for $7 and cuttings, small plants will sell for $9, including tax. Dahlia aficionados will be on hand to advise on planting and caring for the dahlias.. With so many varieties, there is something for everyone!! Just no blue blooms. Enjoy!
How to Tell Your Own Story with Naomi Shibata
Writer Naomi Shibata will share how documenting family stories began as a gift to her mother and evolved into a means of connecting five generations of her family. She will discuss lessons learned along the way, as well as how she worked with novice writers to help them turn oral histories into the written word. Interested persons may sign up for a summer writing workshop that begins in June and concludes in September with a reading of participants' stories. Castro Valley Orchestra Spring Concert
Castro Valley Orchestra will present their Spring concert on Sunday, May 5th at 2 PM at the Castro Valley Center for the Arts, 19501 Redwood Rd., Castro Valley. Works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Bach will be performed. Isaac Kim and James Choi will be featured in the Bach Double Violin Concerto. There will be a reception immediately after the concert to meet the soloists and musicians. Admission is free.
AIR QUALITY AND ASTHMA AWARENESS CELEBRATION
Join the Castro Valley Library and its guest the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to celebrate Air Quality Awareness Week and Asthma Awareness Month. Meet representatives from the U.S. EPA’s Indoor Environments Team in the Library’s lobby to learn more about the environment and human health on Wednesday, May 8 from 3:30 pm to 6 pm. They’ll be demonstrating a do-it-yourself air cleaner for your home, in addition to sharing free educational materials for all ages. And from May 6 to 10 you can look for information in the Library and on our Facebook page about air quality topics like wildland fires and asthma. ParkFest: Celebrate 90 Years of East Bay Regional Parks
This year marks nine decades since a group of local leaders, inspired by some of America’s first conservationists, successfully brought the creation of the East Bay Regional Park District to residents. It’s time to celebrate the open space, parks, trails, safe and healthful recreation, and environmental education provided by that incredible vision 90 years ago. Quilted Treasures XVIII: Together Again
Amador Valley Quilters is hosting our 18th quilt show – Quilted Treasures XVIII: Together Again – on June 22, 2024, from 10am-4pm and June 23, 2024, from 10am-3pm. The show will be held at the Trinity Church Gymnasium, 557 Olivina Avenue, Livermore, CA, with free parking. General admission is $10; children under 12 are free. Hill and Valley Club will hold its annual Flea Market on Saturday, April 27th, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at our clubhouse, 1808 B Street (corner of Linden Street) in Hayward. Eden Garden Club Meeting

The speaker will be Carol Dixon with a review on Monarch Butterflies and a talk about Yellow Swallow Tails. Carol has an MA in Biological Science from USC Hayward, an instructor of Biology and ecology at Chabot and Ohlone Colleges for 22 years, then 16 years at Castro Valley High School. Livermore Spring Art Show 2024

The Benefits of Neurodiversity within the Workplace
The Castro Valley Adult and Career Education Strides Paid Internship Program (PIP), in collaboration with Behavior Pivot Consulting, presents an interactive workshop for employers to understand the benefits of neurodiversity within the workplace.
There is a large population of individuals with intellectual disabilities or brain-based differences that are unable to find meaningful employment. Much of this is due to lack of awareness and education on how to hire and employ someone with an intellectual disability.
This workshop highlights the business benefits of neurodiverse hiring and the advantages that companies are gaining by educating themselves on how to tap into a talented and dedicated workforce that is ready for employment.

START SMART: TEEN DRIVER PROGRAM

The California Highway Patrol and the Castro Valley Library present Start Smart: Teen Driver Program. CHP officers will discuss traffic collision avoidance techniques, collision causing factors, driver/parent responsibilities, and seatbelt usage. Additionally, testimonies will be provided by officers who have investigated fatal collisions involving teens, and by family members who have lost love ones in traffic collisions.
The Start Smart program is a driver safety education class which targets new and future licensed teenage drivers between the age of 15 - 19 and their parents/guardians.
A parent/guardian is required to attend the class with their teen.

Spring Easter Musical (Saturday)

Eden Garden Club Plant Sale
Sponsored by Eden Garden Club the Plant Sale is held at Paradise Gardens located at 20095 Mission Blvd. in Hayward from 10am to 3pm. The Plant Sale features vegetables, perennials, succulents, shrubs, natives, garden art, pottery, garden supplies and tools. Donations of plants and garden related items in good condition are accepted from 5:30am to 9:30am. The proceeds are given for School Garden Grants awarded to CVUSD and HUSD schools. HARD 79th Annual Egg Hunt and Bonnet Parade
The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District will be hosting the 79th Annual Egg Hunt and Bonnet Parade on Satuday, March 30 beginning at 9am at Kennedy Park (19501 Hesperian Blvd., Hayward). Bonnet Parade restration will begin promptly at 9am. The Bonnet Parade, led by the Bunny, will begin right after the egg hunt. Bonnet Parade participants must be 6 years and under. All bonnets must be homemade and be worn by the participants during the parade to qualify. The Egg Hunt will start directly at 10am. THe event will take place rain or shine.

Join the community in the mesmerizing orchestra, vocals, and acting of Castro Valley residents who will dive deep into the timeless question: Who actually is Jesus? and bring to life his teachings and impact on humanity. Following the show, attendees will have a unique opportunity to submit their questions about the message to be answered on-stage in a short panel discussion.
Before the curtains rise, we invite the community to our immersive exhibit in the lobby, where the spotlight will shine on the stories of local Castro Valley residents. This exhibit weaves together the diverse tapestry of our community's journey with faith and the profound transformation that comes with the Easter story.

Free Community Band Concert
Has the wet weather been getting you down?. Mark your calendars and invite your friends for a free Spring concert put on by Castro Valley Adult & Career Education. On March 27th at 7:30 pm Kathy Maier will lead the Castro Valley Community Band in a concert celebrating music from around the United States as well as foreign lands. The concert is FREE and at the Castro Valley Center for the Arts. Come out and celebrate the coming of Spring!
EBRPD’s Big Break All Abilities Day
Explore nature at your own pace and in your own way at Big Break All Abilities Day on March 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drop in any time during the free event to join Big Break naturalists for nature exploration and activities. No registration is required.
There will be a special 90th Anniversary presentation commemorating 90 years of East Bay Regional Parks at 10:30 a.m. during the story time program.
The All Abilities Day program is FREE and inclusive for all abilities, with hands-on experiences, American Sign Language and Spanish-speaking interpreters on site, indoor and outdoor options, and wheelchair accessible programs and facilities. Over 450 children and adults attended Big Break’s most recent All Abilities Day in October of last year.
The program will feature several interpretive stations focused on various elements of nature. Visitors can enjoy walking, riding, and rolling along the paved and relatively flat Big Break Regional Trail and learning about the plants, animals, birds, and fish that call the Delta home. Travel along paved trails to visit stations to touch fur, listen to birds, draw wildlife, sit on benches to scan the water, or paint the view. Big Break All Abilities Day offers something fun for everyone.
Big Break All Abilities Day is made possible through funding from the Regional Parks Foundation (RPF). In 2023, the RPF awarded grants to fund American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and language translation. RPF has supported All Abilities Days since its inception in 2017.

Our Speaker will be Lori Caldwell an Alameda County Master Composter and more. The focus is Building Healthy Soil. Lori will be talking about all the techniques to help with moisture retention, increasing soil tilth and feeding the soil food web. Topics will include compost, mulch and perennial plants. Income Inequality and Labor’s Response
We are in a period of increasing income inequality and the labor movement is working to address it. Join us as Bill Sokol helps us understand this important topic on Sunday, March 24 from 2 to 3:30pm.
He’ll explain:
what income inequality is
how and why it persists
what unions have done to address it
how the demands of recent strikers may help even the playing field
Bill Sokol is a practicing labor lawyer with Weinberg, Roger and Rosenfeld, the largest union-side law firm in the nation. He litigates in State Courts, Federal Courts, and practices extensively in arbitrations, as well as participating in collective bargaining from time to time.
He was a talk show host at KPFA/KPFB/KFCF FM, Pacifica Radio, for over 20 years, and does regular commentaries on the law for KQED FM.
He teaches at San Francisco State University in the Labor and Employment Studies Department and has been a guest lecturer at other colleges and universities in the Bay Area.
