CV Couple Creates New Podcast for Kids

This past summer Castro Valley parents Nicholas and Rosa Leither went looking for storytelling podcasts for children. They were headed on a long road trip and wanted to find something to help Itasca (7) and River (4) pass the time. What they found were podcasts with lots of ads, cutesy voices, or characters from Disney movies.

“We could do something better than this,” Rosa remembers thinking. With a background in radio and television, she already had the software and equipment at home to edit and record professional quality audio. And she had a husband who kept telling original stories each night. Over the next few months, the idea kept coming back. Why not create a podcast for kids with these great stories?

That is exactly what the couple has done with Three Detail Stories, which launched on New Year’s Day. The weekly podcast invites you into the Leither home, where bedtime is an adventure designed by kids. Itasca and River choose three details and Nicholas, aka “Daddy Dude,” must come up with a story including those three details on the spot.

“I think creativity is an important thing to keep alive. I hope that this idea will spread to other families and give them ideas about how to stay creative and make their own storytelling traditions.”

Nicholas Leither teaches writing at Santa Clara University and is an avid reader as well as a creative writer. When asked how he is able to come up with complete stories on the spot, he admitted, “I really don’t know. It’s just easy for me to put details together and come up with a narrative that connects them.”

The Leithers have been in Castro Valley since 2016, when they bought a fixer-upper on Proctor Road. With their oldest at Proctor Elementary and their youngest at CVPNS they feel deeply connected to the other families in town.

“We are so thankful to be parents in Castro Valley,” Rosa said. “When we go to the park, we know we’ll run into someone we know. When we sign up for a HARD class or a local camp, we know our kids will have a friend in the mix. The community is incredible.”

The couple is now inviting listeners of Three Detail Stories to email in their own details to be included on the podcast. Reach them at threedetailstories@gmail.com
