CV Rotary Celebrates World Polio Day
Every year, 1.4 million Rotarians in over 220 countries and geographical areas mobilize for World Polio Day to raise awareness of polio and gather support for the global effort to make sure that every child is protected from polio. On October 24, the Rotary Club of Castro Valley will join with Rotary International and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) - the World Health Organization (WHO), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi, the vaccine alliance, to celebrate World Polio Day.
This day recognizes the great strides that have been made to reduce polio cases by 99.9% worldwide over the past 35 years and reduced the circulation of wild polio to Pakistan and Afghanistan; however, the work is not finished. By staying tenacious, hopeful, and committed, we have a opportunity to make history by ending polio, which will be only the second human disease ever to be eradicated.
Castro Valley Rotary President Christian Carr noted, “The Rotary Club of Castro Valley is honored to be part of this worldwide effort to eradicate polio. In the past two years, Club members have donated approximately $30,000 to the End Polio Now campaign, which the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matches 2-to-1. On behalf of Rotary and its global partners, I
encourage you to support this effort. Eradicating polio isn’t easy, but making history never is, but we can achieve it by acting together.” Make your donation at https://tinyurl.com/CVEndPolioNow.
