Registrar of Voters Recall Two Sunol Glen Unified School District Trustees

On July 19, 2024, the Alameda County Registrar of Voters certified the recall of two Sunol Glen Unified School District trustees, Ryan Jergensen and Linda Hurley. The California Education Code section 5904 mandates that the President of the Alameda County Board of Education (ACBOE) fill the vacancies by appointing members of the county board to the school district board.

President Cheryl Cook-Kallio, Trustee for Area 7 including Sunol, appointed herself and Area 4 Trustee Aisha Knowles to the two vacant positions.

Alameda County voters elected the ACBOE Trustees to safeguard the best interests of all Alameda County students, which includes ACBOE Trustees briefly serving in the role of Sunol Glen School Board Members.

In addition to being mandated by law, the appointments are necessary to ensure that the Sunol Glen Unified School District has a full board to conduct business as the school year approaches, to ensure the stability and consistency of business operations, particularly, and most importantly, the delivery of educational programs to the students that it serves.

In the spirit of cooperation and support for local control, the ACBOE trustees will work with Board Member Ted Romo to rapidly return the vacated seats to the community as soon as possible.

Please note that one of the two vacated seats will be up for election by the Sunol Glen Unified School District voters as early as the November 5, 2024, General Election. By law, the remaining seat, which has a term that expires in November 2026, may be filled by appointment or special election.

ACBOE President Cook-Kallio will fill the position that is scheduled to be voted on in the November General Election. She will attend the July 24 special School Board meeting, and the August, September, and October meetings in her capacity as a Sunol Glen School Board Member. No meeting is scheduled for November. The newly elected School Board Member will be sworn in at the December 10 meeting.

An application process will be used to appoint a resident of the Sunol Glen Unified School District to the seat Trustee Knowles will temporarily fill. Trustee Knowles will attend the July 24 special meeting and the decision on the appointment of an applicant will be made at the August 14 meeting.
