Congratulations, Jack Del Rio
It was a great joy to see that Jack Del Rio was chosen as Athlete of the Week! Not only was Jack a standout athlete in the college and professional ranks, but also as a high school phenom at Hayward High School (HHS) in three sports, football, basketball and baseball. One story that still reminds me of his stellar high school career took place in the spring of 1981. As one of the assistant baseball coaches at HHS under head baseball coach Jim Bisenius, I recall the Farmers were playing in the NCS Sectional Playoffs and had an important game scheduled at Chabot College the same night as the Senior Promo. Jack was rather frustrated to have both this playoff game and his senior prom the same night. He wanted the game to end quickly. What did he do? He hit two towering home runs, both yards beyond the Chabot College field fence, quickly clinching the HHS victory…and providing time for senior athletes to head to their senior prom. Jack took care of that game in true Del Rio fashion!
