Response to Frederick Spiller
Editor,
In my previous letter to the editor, due to the ongoing gun violence in America, as witnessed by the latest school shooting in Michigan, I encouraged a movement to rescind the 2nd Amendment. This did not imply a total ban on guns. However, it would allow States to legislate restrictions on ownership. Plenty of countries do so, and do not have the gun problem we have now. Laws are often changed to meet the expectations and circumstances of the time. This does not show disrespect for the law, but an understanding that things change and need to be adjusted. We tend to hold our founding fathers up as some kind of legal Gods, but they were as fallible as any of us. For example, they legislated civil rights, while at the same time owned slaves and restricted the rights of women. Over time such restrictions were eliminated because people realized the need for change. Well, now is the time for another change, to rescind the 2nd Amendment.
