Thanks to the Good Samaritan
Mega kudos to the good Samaritan who has cleaned the litter on Lake Chabot Road and continues to keep it clean. Lake Chabot Road is a gorgeous two-lane country road that winds through century old stands of oak, bay laurel and eucapytus trees. It divides the towering Fairmont Ridge to the west and the Lake Chabot Regional Park to the east and provides spectacular views of Lake Chabot far below. The parkland is populated by deer, turkeys, coyotes, turkey vultures, hawks and eagles that you often see from the road. The road is used by hikers, bicyclists and park visitors from San Leandro and beyond.
Unfortunately, the road is also used by folks who have abandoned the social contract as a dumping ground of large amounts of trash and debris as was described in the October 30, 2024 Forum. Other sources of lesser amounts of trash are from people who illegally park along the road to party and from people throwing trash from their vehicles. The trash and garbage are deadly to the wildlife and mars the wilderness views so many enjoy.
I believe it a good idea to add fencing along the road in the places that can be used to dump garbage and debris. Although fencing would partially detract from the beautiful views, there could be enough breaks in the fencing to allow for the views and for wildlife to migrate across the road. Anyone who has the inclination to dump garbage and trash and to litter from their vehicles should think about the wildlife who live there and the people who use and enjoy the wilderness.
