New Varsity Football Coach Named
John Trotman has been selected as the Head Football Coach for Castro Valley High School beginning with the 2024-2025 Football Season, school officials said last week.
Trotman comes to CVHS with 22 years of high school coaching experience. Eight of those years as a Varsity Head Coach. He was also named a 2022-2023 NCS Coach of the Year and has experience overseeing a Leadership Program within the Football program. Conditioning and fieldwork are scheduled to begin in early June.
Trotman’s hire was made official on January 31 following a vote by the Castro Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) Board of Trustees. CVHS Principal Chris Fortenberry made the announcement public in his February newsletter.
Trotman says he looks forward to “putting a product on the field Friday nights that the student body, faculty, administration, and community can be proud of.”
Coach Trotman’s contract is as a “walk-on coach.” During the business week, he is a Hospital Eligibility Worker Supervisor for the City and County of San Francisco Department of Public Health.
CVHS Athletic Director Katie Stacy said Trotman was one of nearly 20 qualified applicants considered but was chosen for his vision and philosophy around student development.
“I am looking forward to working with and supporting John Trotman as he transitions to CVHS,” Stacy said in the newsletter. “His vision and philosophy align with the mission and vision of the school and Athletic Department. I can’t wait to get started.”
Trotman replaces longtime Trojan Varsity Football coach Denny Molzen, who stepped down in December 2023 to make his family a “top priority.” Molzen’s resignation and several other complaints about CVHS’s sports programs prompted a student-led petition last month asking principal Fortenberry and the CVUSD Board to reassign Stacy away from her Athletic Director position.
