Sutter Health Names Inaugural Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer

In a groundbreaking move, Sutter Health named Dana Beckton as its first-ever Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer (CDIO) last week.

The appointment marks a significant step in fortifying and prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at the healthcare provider as well as fostering a more diverse and inclusive healthcare environment within the California-based integrated health system.

Beckton, who will be an integral member of Sutter’s Executive Leadership Team, is set to spearhead the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategy, working directly with Sutter Health President and CEO Warner Thomas and interim Chief Human Resources Officer Gail Lerch to drive DEI programs and initiatives.

“DEI is fundamental to our mission and values at Sutter Health. It is pivotal in cultivating trust and forming partnerships within the communities we serve, ensuring the provision of high-quality, equitable, and culturally competent care,” highlighted Thomas. “Amidst a landscape where some organizations are retracting their dedication to DEI, we are steadfast in our commitment to prioritize and advance this crucial work. Welcoming Dana to our team is a tremendous step forward for us.”

Beckton expressed enthusiasm about her role, emphasizing, “DEI is intrinsic to our people, culture, and communities. We aim to integrate this work across every facet of Sutter Health, fostering an environment that is not only the premier destination for employment and healthcare but also a space where inclusivity thrives.”

At the core of Beckton's responsibilities will be fostering trust and a sense of belonging among Sutter Health's staff, physicians, and clinicians. Her purview will encompass overseeing efforts to augment diversity in recruitment, training, and development, facilitating career growth at Sutter while attracting a more diverse pool of candidates.

Before joining Sutter Health, Beckton led DEI initiatives at Sentara Healthcare, aligning DEI aspirations with the organization's strategy and driving operational changes in the workplace, workforce, and community. Her prior experiences at Christiana Care Health System and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia also underscore her extensive background in spearheading impactful DEI initiatives.

Beckton is scheduled to assume her new role on January 8, 2024.
