16 Brilliant Things About Fitness
A few weeks ago, my family and I went to the Lesher Center in Walnut Creek to see a touching play called “Every Brilliant Thing.” In it, the main character starts a list of everything that makes him happy so he can cheer up his depressed mother. If you have a chance to see it, I’d recommend it.
In that spirit, I thought I’d write 16 brilliant things about fitness. These are in no particular order.
The idea that anyone can feel better.
The resilience and empowerment it brings.
Puppies and kitties (maybe this isn’t about fitness, but it always applies.)
The empowering feeling of being able to do something you couldn’t do before.
The rush you get when you finish a good workout.
That feeling in your hamstrings when you get straight leg deadlifts just right.
That feeling in your core when you get “dead bugs” just right (an exercise done on your back).
When you figure out another piece in the puzzle that is your body and how it moves.
Dumbbell curls.
The thrill of knowing you are still capable of surprising yourself.
Discovering how to deal with failure.
The kind of laughter that only comes after giving every single thing you have.
Tomorrow’s workout.
Doing something good for yourself.
Being out of breath for a good reason.
Better bone density.
