Castro Valley Gears Up Against Cyber Crime
In a collaborative effort to empower the community against the rising threat of identity theft and other cybercrimes, residents of Castro Valley gathered on Wednesday, January 11, at the Adobe Center.
The event, co-sponsored by Assemblymember Liz Ortega and the Castro Valley & Eden Area Chamber of Commerce featured insights from Elvis Chan, an Assistant Special Agent in Charge from the San Francisco FBI office.
“This was a terrific event with lots of great information. We were very happy to partner with Assemblymember Ortega to sponsor this event for the community,” said Chamber chairman Todd Anglin.
Special Agent Chan addressed the audience, shedding light on how criminals manipulate individuals using various tactics. Criminals can exploit a person’s trust by posing as relatives or deceiving a small business by pretending to be a vendor or supplier.
The key takeaways from Special Agent Chan included practical tips to enhance personal security. He emphasized the importance of freezing credit with the three main credit agencies, opting for credit cards over debit cards, and exercising caution regarding email attachments or links from unfamiliar sources.
