Age Well Drive Smart: Senior Driver Traffic Safety Seminar
Stay safe…and save money! Registration has begun for the library’s popular senior driving program! Conducted by the California Highway Patrol, this seminar will include: Compensating for Age-Related Changes, Tune-Up Your Driving Skills, Rules of the Road, Safe Driving Tips; and more! The Comedy Den Present - Comedian Kirk McHenry
A native of Oakland, CA Kirk has the ability to deliver gut bursting laughs to his audience. This is what sets Kirk McHenry apart from the modern day comic. His comedy reflects his life in the inner city, to prep school in the suburbs, experiencing college life in the south and even a successful four-year stint in the Marine Corps. Benefit Show for Gaza Relief
Come enjoy local artists and community in support of relief work in Gaza at 7pm on Saturday, May 18th at the Smalltown Society Clinic Space (2490 Grove Way. Castro Valley). Proceeds will be going to Partners Relief and Development, an NGO that brings aid to children in conflict zones, and their efforts in Gaza. Suggested donation: $15. Artists will include Michael Kim Eubanks (The Underlay) and Fego Navarro (Lyrical Opposition). There will be drinks for sale and a small presentation about the work of Partners Relief and Development. Also beer from Faction and wine from Ramey.

Are you overwhelmed with binders and bins full of genealogy notes and family photographs? Join us to learn how to create an organized digital family history on Sunday, May 19 at 2 pm at the Library.
In this workshop you’ll learn how to: create your own digital family history; create an oral history using artificial intelligence; scan and restore photos with free or cost effective resources; and create family history videos.
The presenter, Ron Chan, is the founder and executive director of the Bay Area Chinese Genealogy Group and has extensive experience creating his own digital family history and advising others.

Ken Martin Memorial Bocce Tournament
The Castro Valley Bocce Group will host its annual Ken Martin Memorial Bocce Tournament at Adobe Park in Castro Valley on Saturday, June 15th. The event will be sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the George Mark Children’s House https://georgemark.org/, which focuses on quality of life and continuity of care for children with illnesses that modern healthcare cannot yet cure, or for those who have complex, chronic medical conditions. Castro Valley Orchestra Spring Concert
Castro Valley Orchestra will present their Spring concert on Sunday, May 5th at 2 PM at the Castro Valley Center for the Arts, 19501 Redwood Rd., Castro Valley. Works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Bach will be performed. Isaac Kim and James Choi will be featured in the Bach Double Violin Concerto. How to Tell Your Own Story with Naomi Shibata
Writer Naomi Shibata will share how documenting family stories began as a gift to her mother and evolved into a means of connecting five generations of her family. She will discuss lessons learned along the way, as well as how she worked with novice writers to help them turn oral histories into the written word. Interested persons may sign up for a summer writing workshop that begins in June and concludes in September with a reading of participants' stories. Dahlia Tuber Sale
For spectacular summer color, it’s time to plant those dahlias! The San Leandro Dahlia Society will hold its annual tuber and small plant sale on Saturday, May 4, 10 am- 1pm at the Milford Garden Improvement Clubhouse, 13055 Aurora Drive, San Leandro. That’s across the street from Garfield Elementary School. Tubers will sell for $7 and cuttings, small plants will sell for $9, including tax. Join us as Becca demystifies the complex network and application processes related to scholarships for college and prepares you for the tuition ahead. Learn how to approach the scholarship search process, and what the realistic timeline looks like if you or your student plans Fall enrollment. Becca teaches the “5-click strategy” of digging through identified websites with intention. Participants will leave this interactive workshop with a categorized list of search terms for themselves, a 3 step-process for online searches, and a better sense of how public institutions, private donors, and large organizations advertise scholarship opportunities. Rebecca Lippman brings a decade of experience as a UCLA instructor and advisor at the Center for Scholarships and Scholarly Enrichment (formerly the Scholarship Resource Center), where she coached undergraduate students through the process of identifying, applying for, and managing scholarships. The Benefits of Neurodiversity within the Workplace
The Castro Valley Adult and Career Education Strides Paid Internship Program (PIP), in collaboration with Behavior Pivot Consulting, presents an interactive workshop for employers to understand the benefits of neurodiversity within the workplace.
There is a large population of individuals with intellectual disabilities or brain-based differences that are unable to find meaningful employment. Much of this is due to lack of awareness and education on how to hire and employ someone with an intellectual disability.
This workshop highlights the business benefits of neurodiverse hiring and the advantages that companies are gaining by educating themselves on how to tap into a talented and dedicated workforce that is ready for employment.

The California Highway Patrol and the Castro Valley Library present Start Smart: Teen Driver Program. CHP officers will discuss traffic collision avoidance techniques, collision causing factors, driver/parent responsibilities, and seatbelt usage. Additionally, testimonies will be provided by officers who have investigated fatal collisions involving teens, and by family members who have lost love ones in traffic collisions.
The Start Smart program is a driver safety education class which targets new and future licensed teenage drivers between the age of 15 - 19 and their parents/guardians.
A parent/guardian is required to attend the class with their teen.
