The LWVEA is hosting a virtual Candidate Forum to help you learn more about candidates running for the Hayward Area Recreation and Park Board of Directors. The Candidates invited to participate include Louis Manuel Andrade, Joseph Grcar, Rick Hatcher, Kenneth Owen, Luis Reynoso, and Peter Rosen. Registration is required so that we can safely get the participation link to you. LWVEA invites voters to attend upcoming events to learn more about local candidates running for office and learn about each Proposition on the 2024 General Election Ballot. DMT Presents Season Preview Celebration
The second year of DMT Presents is here, and it's set to be the most spectacular one yet! This beloved series, known for showcasing the finest performing arts from the Bay Area and beyond to the heart of the East Bay, returns with a season filled with creativity, innovation, and unforgettable experiences. Ashland Zocalo Park Grand Opening
The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) in collaboration with The Trust for Public Land (TPL) and key project partners, has turned a blighted vacant lot into the Ashland Zocalo Park, a thriving community hub fostering health, wellness, and community engagement for generations to come.
Come join H.A.R.D. and TPL for the grand opening on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Ashland Zocalo Park is a prime 1-acre site in the heart of the Ashland neighborhood. Designed as an urban plaza, the park will feature an array of recreational features and park amenities catering to individuals of all ages. From a vibrant public plaza for pop-up markets to intergenerational fitness and play areas, an outdoor stage, walking loops, open spaces, restroom facilities adorned with stunning mosaics crafted by a local Oakland artist, Debbie Koppman, and an interactive water feature. The park will be easy to find with its unique multicolored shade structure, situated at the corner of 166th Ave and East 14th Street.
The Trust for Public Land was awarded a $7.2 million state grant for the development of Ashland Zocalo Park. This Proposition 68 grant is part of the California Department of Parks and Recreation's Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Grant Program.
"This project represents more than just the creation of a park; it embodies our commitment to fostering healthy, livable communities," said Kira Maritano, Sr. Program Manager at The Trust for Public Land. "Ashland Zocalo Park will not only provide much-needed green space but also support active lifestyles, social connectivity, and a sense of pride in the local community."
Nestled amidst the bustling regions of San Leandro, and Hayward, Ashland represents a vital area within unincorporated Alameda County, characterized by its high population density and need for accessible green spaces and community gathering spots.
“Ashland Zocalo Park promises to be a beacon of community pride, fostering wellness, recreation, and social cohesion for residents of all ages and backgrounds,” said Peter Rosen, President of the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District Board of Directors.

HARD 79th Annual Egg Hunt and Bonnet Parade
The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District will be hosting the 79th Annual Egg Hunt and Bonnet Parade on Satuday, March 30 beginning at 9am at Kennedy Park (19501 Hesperian Blvd., Hayward). Bonnet Parade restration will begin promptly at 9am. The Bonnet Parade, led by the Bunny, will begin right after the egg hunt. Bonnet Parade participants must be 6 years and under. All bonnets must be homemade and be worn by the participants during the parade to qualify. The Egg Hunt will start directly at 10am. THe event will take place rain or shine.

H.A.R.D. Mobile Recreation
The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) is thrilled to invite you to join us at our February Mobile Recreation pop-ups. GO H.A.R.D.! Teen Cohort for Outdoor Education
Calling all teens (13-17 years)! Join the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) for our new Outdoor Education and Excursion program: Get Outdoors and Go H.A.R.D.
Starting February 17, we’ll meet every Saturday from 10 AM – 4 PM at the Ashland Community Center until the end of the program on March 23. Together, we can explore local parks and learn about nature, environmental stewardship, and careers in Recreation.
You’ll get to meet new friends, build outdoor skills, and get to know your community as we participate in activities, such as Hayward Shoreline Hike and Clean-Up, Quarry Lakes Excursion; Coyote Hills Excursion; Fishing; rock climbing on our 28-foot rock wall, hiking; and a Sulphur Creek Guided Tour. Please note that these locations and activities are subject to change due to weather.

The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) has teamed up with ODC/Dance to present a spectacular rendition of "The Velveteen Rabbit" on December 16th and 17th at the Douglas Morrisson Theatre as part of the new DMT Presents series.
Voted as San Francisco Magazine’s Best of the Bay, ODC/Dance is making a rare appearance in the East Bay to commemorate the 37th anniversary of this beloved Bay Area holiday tradition. “The Velveteen Rabbit,” directed and choreographed by KT Nelson and featuring students from H.A.R.D’s dance program, is a heartwarming adaptation of Margery Williams’ cherished book.
Prepare to be enchanted as “The Velveteen Rabbit” overflows with humor, festive costumes, whimsical characters, and just the right touch of holiday joy! This captivating production boasts engaging narration, a delightful musical score composed by Benjamin Britten, and larger-than-life storybook characters brought to life by the world-class dancers of the ODC Dance Company at the Douglas Morrisson Theatre.
Performances will be on Saturday, December 16, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. and Sunday, December 17, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. The performance duration is 90 minutes with a 15-minute Intermission.

H.A.R.D., KQED Present The Russell City Blues
The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) has partnered with KQED to present The Russell City Blues: Stories and Music of a Lost Neighborhood. The evening of live music, history and storytelling was first presented last September at KQED Headquarters. The production gives voice to the rich neighborhood of Russell City that was razed in 1966.
The presentation marks the official reopening of the Douglas Morrisson Theater and the launch of the new “H.A.R.D. Presents Series." H.A.R.D. worked with KQED over several months to bring this extremely important program back home to its roots, as H.A.R.D.’s President of the Board of Directors, Rick Hatcher notes,“It's impossible to present a performing arts series in Hayward without paying tribute to the rich musical history of our local community--learning about the past in order to be informed for the future."
The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, known locally as “H.A.R.D.," is an independent special use district created to provide park and recreation services for over 309,000 residents. HARD's 78th Annual Egg Hunt and Bonnet Parade
The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) invites the community to the 78th Annual Egg Hunt and Bonnet Parade This annual spring tradition for H.A.R.D. will take place at Kennedy Park on Saturday, April 8, 2023.
New this year, the annual event will start with the Egg Hunt for children from 1 to 9 year-olds. The hunt will commence at 10:00 a.m. sharp. There will be age-specific areas where children hunt for eggs: one for 1 to 2-year-olds; another for 3- to 4-year-olds; a third for 5- to 6-year-olds; with the last one being for 7- to 9-year-olds.
The Bonnet Parade, led by the Bunny, will begin after the Egg Hunt. The Bonnet Parade registration will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. Bonnet Parade participants must be 6 years and under and all bonnets must be homemade and be worn by the participants during the parade to qualify. Participants will have their homemade bonnets judged in the following categories: the prettiest, most unusual, and most colorful.
The event will take place rain or shine.
Castro Valley Women’s Club Meeting
The Castro Valley Women’s Club will be holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 19, at the Clubhouse at 18330 Redwood Road in Castro Valley. Our speaker will be Linda Cliff, president of the Hayward Area Recreation & Park District (Hard) Foundation Board. Linda will speak of the support the Board gives to HARD as HARD provides a wide variety of engaging and educational classes and activities. Please join us at 1 pm for this hour long presentation. H.A.R.D. Hosts Virtual 5K, 10K Run/Walk
The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) invites the community to join the Virtual 5K or 10K on the Bay Walk/Run, held throughout the month of September. Registration is required in order to participate in the awards. The 5K or 10K on the Bay is an all-ages run or walk that benefits the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center (HSIC) programs. There will be two courses offered, a 5K and a 10K. Your treadmill, your neighborhood, or your favorite trail walking or running using the RaceJoy tracking App. After the race is completed, awards will be given to the fastest overall male and female runners in each age category. Registration may be completed online. The registration fee is $20 per person. Registrants will receive an event t-shirt that can be picked up after the race.
